Mount Longonot; Vista

Mount Longonot is a young dormant volcano created during volcanic eruptions that formed the great Rift Valley. The name  Longonot is derived from the Maasai word Oloongong’ot meaning mountains of many spurs or steep ridges.

The ecosystem inside the crater is completely different from the outside. The sides of the mountain are dry with sparse vegetation cover.  The massive crater floor is covered in a sea of green, probably due to the fertile volcanic soils which are much more conducive to plant life.

At about 70 km from Nairobi Mt. Longonot seems a great adventure. Activities within the mountain include hiking, rock climbing, biking and observing birds and wildlife.

I remember climbing this at some point in primary school, although the memory is clouded by plenty of dust. Dust managed to settle of folks eyelashes. It was epic. lol
